Snappy Operas is Mahogany Opera Group’s nationwide project making opera with young people aged 7-11.
Between 2016 and 2018, Mahogany will work with ten regional partners, ten composers and librettists, and around 1,500 young people to create ten new, ten-minute long operas that can be learned and performed in a day. We’re creating five operas in the first cycle (2016-17), and five operas in the second cycle (2017-18).
Each Snappy Opera is being developed by a different creative partnership working closely with groups of young people to bring stories, characters and music to life. The composers and writers involved represent some of the most exciting voices creating music and dramatic work, from leading artists to those emerging in the field. Following the creation of the works, the participating regions will work with directors, music directors and repetiteurs to bring the whole cycle of operas to life, culminating in a series of mass performances across the country.
Snappy Operas is led by artistic director Frederic Wake-Walker and music director Stephen Deazley.
